(my windows media player, win-7, 64 bit, preinstalled, plus this codec

plays mkv but not some advance avi files yet so I am trying to figure a good way to fix that or have a good AVI player, I am installing AVI Codec Pack Pro fromthe above website.

2. firefox 4.0 & flash player (flash also for internet explorer)

3. Lyx (friendly LateX from Lyx.com)

4.  winzip (paid software, instead will try linux environ from Cygwin and sourceforge, wow tar and gunzip works on cygwin, uninstalled winzip)

5. virtual window 4.3 (for multiple desktops, isn’t working yet)

6. CygWin successfully installed: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ug/using.html

great, cygwin works perfect and commands tar and gunzip work fine: open Xwin with startxwin — -noclipboard

and for physicists: http://www-cdf.fnal.gov/~cplager/cygwin.html (haven’t tried this link yet)

7. xfig and latex are working perfect  (I have cygwin xfig and MikTeX stand-alone)

Note that the startxwin.bat as mentioned at above links aren’t supported anymore
